Calculator Check-up: Calculus I and II (AB and BC)

The College Board requires that you are able to do three things besides graph a function on your graphing calculator. Although you may use a different calculator than I do (I prefer the TI-83 models), you should take this week to learn how to operate it. I will post answers with TI-83 directions next week.

(a)

(b)

(c)

Difficulty:

Solution:

(a) Instead of replacing each and every x with 1.5, simply store the value of 1.5 to x. On the TI-83 series, this is done with the <sto> button located right above the <on> button. The syntax is as follows: (value) <sto> (variable). In the below screenshot, I first store the variable to x and then simply type in the expression including the x's. To re-evaluate the expression, store a new value to x, and then press <2nd>-<enter> until the expression reappears (this feature repeats all of your recent entries) and then press <enter>. It may be easier on the 83+ silver edition.

(b) The 83 uses nDeriv to avaluate numerical derivatives, under the <math> button menu. The syntax is nderiv (function, x, value at which to take derivative). Don't forget that middle x in the last comma fields.

(c) To evaluate a definite integral, use fnInt (again in the <math> menu) like this: fnInt(function, x, low bound, high bound).
